Well just in six metropolitan areas across the US with a pilot program of AAA Trucks that can recharge EV Cars. The cities are Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, Knoxville, TN, Tampa Bay (Area), FL, San Francisco & Los Angeles, CA. What a great way for AAA to keep relevant in the changing automotive industry. I don’t have a EV car so don’t think much about the issues drivers have if their cars run out of electricity.
I saw this article in Autoweek (October 2011) about the new trucks being unveiled at the 2011 Plug-In Conference and Exposition in Raleigh, NC. I became fascinated by the mechanics of the truck after reading more details about this service. I wonder if it can still work on other cars or if they will have to have a fleet of repair trucks just for EV autos. Green Charge Networks has supplied the ‘juice’ with a removable lithium-ion battery pack for mobile charging and is just enough (by their estimates) to get them to a location where they can plug in the car. They will also have other alternative charging withvehicles equipped with generators powered by alternative fuels or other power sources. I’m sure that if the pilot program works out than AAA will likely retrofit current vehicles with alternative power services for EV cars. I assume that it will take at least twenty years for EV cars to be affordable for the ‘average’ person as far as size and style and of course price so this service will likely concentrate in large cities on coasts.
I wonder how AAA will charge for this service? Maybe an additional fee or different price point entirely for electric cars.
