Unhuman – a bloody afterschool special

Spread the love

It’s the Breakfast Club meets Zombie Apocolypse

The new horror coming of age was co-written by Marcus Dunstan (director) and Patrick Melton’s duo is a fun movie that pays homage to the classic teen coming of age movies but with a horror twist. Not that surprising considering Marcus and Patrick have written Saw Sequels, the Collection Franchise, and will continue working with Blumhouse (shh it’s a secret project) have brought their slasher know-how to a very twisty movie.

The film is centered on a group of kids on a field trip for extra credit that comes from different social groups forced to fight for their lives from a zombie horde well a bunch in an out-of-the-way abandoned building. It turns the genre on its head with Unhuman star Brianne Tju who plays True a young woman trying to figure out her place with her friend Tamra (Ali Gallo) who’s almost cool enough to hang with the ‘cool’ crowd. It’s the normal bully, bullied, and those who try to steer clear all on the bus till a shocking accident puts us on the road to zombie horror apocalypse.

I truly enjoyed the cast and found Brianne as the center of the film in a way that I don’t often see in this genre. Not only is a young woman the star but she’s also a minority (Asian) and the writers incorporated her ethnicity in the ‘otherness’ that kids feel when they are not part of the dominant culture and trying to fit in.

I don’t want to give anything away in the twisty zombie horror but when I say twists I MEAN twists. The cast is rounded out by HS archetypes beauty queen, cool jocks, fat quiet kid, the Black kid who’s always joking, and the two unpopular ‘weirdos’ that everyone likes to pick on. As the movie grows more fast-paced as more zombies find our kids. They slowly start to emerge from the front they put on and become themselves.

It has a surprising heart to the film from how high school can affect you to adulthood depending on what peg you get hammered into, how people remake themselves, and friendship. Especially friendship between girls vs between boys and what you will do for your BFF.

I found the film to be unexpected with a great blend of horror and fun and not as gory as I feared. You have to wait until after the credits for an additional scene that made me hope for Unhuman 2!
