TOMORROWEAR: WEARBLE TECH 2016

Spread the love

The scene is unlike any you’ve ever seen – I enter a pop-up studio space in MakerCity LA to see celebrity chef Kim Vu and the Vucacious Catering team quickly preparing hors d’oeuvres alongside Pinkberry in one corner, interactive VR companies testing out their headsets in another and finally, unbelievably, textbook-attractive LA models decked out in wearable technology.

I’m talking about District2.Co’s TomorroWear Wearable Tech Expo, a self-proclaimed “elite intimate event looking into the future- where fabric science, fashion, and wearable tech intertwine.” Heart Centered Tech, Manufacture LA, & Maker City join to set the stage for an unprecedentedly artsy evening full of good food, intriguing runway fashion and out-of-body experiences.

Here are my favorite projects in each category:

Pastry Still

Food: Did you catch these in the video? I must side with Kim Vu’s curry chicken and avocado-filled pastry puff. Petite and shameless, the unassuming yet mouthwatering hors d’oeuvre struck the right balance between buttery and zesty. Needless to say, I had about six and still could have indulged in sixteen more.

Virtual Reality Experience: Props go to the amazingly immersive, full-range VR experience called Inner Activity. Straight from USC’s Interactive Media and Game Design program, Anshul Pendse and Natalie Gravier set up a mellow physical installation space at TomorroWear complete with Oculus Rift goggles and a tactile bass system called the SubPac. I rattled, shook, marveled and (like an idiot) reached out at my virtual surroundings, unable to believe that I wasn’t truly in the geometric paradise Inner Activity provided!

Wearable Tech: After getting to speak with Left Shoe Company Chairman and CEO about his products and design, I was absolutely floored. Left Shoe endeavors to create perfectly-fitting, dress shoes for a gentleman’s left and right foot. The customization process doesn’t take long: with high-tech socks and a quick balancing act, any man can get his hands on custom kicks for his feet. (Did that make sense?) Here, let Mr. Gordon Clune explain it:

What a night! I can’t wait to see what next year’s TomorroWear Expo holds!
