Season 2 is coming this February on Disney+
One of my favorite panels at the D23 Expo was The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder! It was Black Magic as Bruce W. Smith (Creator/executive producer) and Ralph Farquhar (executive producer) discussed working with Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), JoMarie Payton (Suga Mama), Cedric the Entertainer (Uncle Bobby), Karen Malina White (Dijonay Jones), Soleil Moon Frye (Zoey Howzer), Alisa Reyes (LaCienega Boulevardez), and Keke Palmer (Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins) on the upcoming season.
Bruce and Ralph shared how The Proud Family is still covering stories not often seen in animated kids’ shows from BLM to LGBTQ+ and being a child growing up into adulthood. The original series aired from 2001 to 2005 and for me, it was a slice of life I saw myself as a middle-class Black girl with a large big family on my maternal and paternal side.
When they announced The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder I thought a new generation of children would see themselves as siblings, friends, going to school, dealing with micro-aggressions, and dreaming of being ‘grownups’.
At the panel they did, a live table read from The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, and attendees could see how the cast uses their voices as instruments to make these characters come alive.
After the table read and the cast discussed coming back to the show, working during covid, and seeing each other since Covid at D23 Expo they opened the mics up.
I loved the questions people asked but my favorite was the Latino man saying how he watched the show as a kid and now is able to watch the new season with his daughter that he brought to D23 Expo. It was a magical moment for Bruce and Ralph and many others who likely thought about sharing the show that sparks conversations.
We got to see a clip from the new season and Suga Mama becomes Suga Mama Bear for her son!
