“I feel so lucky to team up with Greenwich Entertainment with their incredible track record of bringing powerful films to the public. The timing of this release couldn’t be better, as we’re seeing a fundamental realignment in political thinking about the role of government and the need to work collectively, not just in order to thrive but literally to survive.” – Yael Bridge, Director
The documentary has interviews with Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cornel West, and Naomi Klein as it shows the history of the American socialist movement. It’s a history many people are unaware and The Big Scary “S” uses archival and current footage and interviews to show that socialism has deep roots in our democracy with programs that benefit many people from public schools to medicare. The fraying of the social net has inspired a push for politicians like Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders to embrace the philosophy and win elections after the 2008 financial crisis, Wall Streat Bailout, the Occupy Movement and current pandemic economic crisis.
“It’s easy to despair at the inability of our political system to respond to the overlapping crises that define our era. The people who comprise the young movement we document in this film have the courage to imagine an entirely different system, one that might be more fair, more productive, and more efficient. Producing this film has made me just a bit more optimistic about the future, and I think it will make audiences feel the same way.” – Morgan Spector, Producer
The Biden Administration is not socialist by any means but they do have an active voting bloc who have expectations from the government and will be very clear when voting on who has policies they feel benefit them or will vote for the lesser of two evils. But as we have seen from the past four years encumbants have been primaried that did not listen to constituents. Over the past decades as generations do worse than previous ones it has made many people want a government that works for the people. Socialism isn’t a dirty word like it was especially with tech savvy elected officials and community organizers using it to educate voters. People want Medicare for All, student loan forgiveness, affordable education, infrastructure mondernization/repair, affordable housing, voter rights (end of suppression voter laws), immigration policy changes, and decent wages.
