I personally found my look a long time ago and do tweak it (somewhat) according to fashions dictates but always keep in mind what my body looks like. I have a coke bottle body type with generous hips, ample bosom, defined waist and long legs. Like many I like certain parts of my body and others … well not so much but as I’ve matured over the years I’ve learned what looks good on me. It’s why usually I don’t do a major shopping unless I have a new career direction that requires a fashion overhaul or weight loss/gain!
So like many I like to shop my closet but when it’s a mess full of clothes that just aren’t working well it gets frustrating and often it’s easier (but more expensive) to just buy something new! When this seems like the only option that means it’s time for a closet intervention! This means at times clothing needs to be tossed, altered or changed with new accessories, buttons or some sort of design element to modernize the item to better fit today’s style. I consider clothing to be a suit of armor or a better example is a hologram that can be changed to suit the situation (chameleon) from work to a date to presenting my best foot forward. It’s one of the things that I adore First Lady Obama for her ability to keep her clothing true to self but still step outside the box with interesting prints and colors. I think more women should follow her example not necessarily run out and buy her exact outfit but embrace her ability to freely be herself and use clothing choices to represent herself.
Mrs. Obama understands the importance of the right outfit for the situation. Some people always seem to over or under dress. Pick items that are not body appropriate or doesn’t project what the wearer intends.
So this is a sensible list on the How to Shop your Closet.
- Remove all items from your closet
- Have bins/bags for donate, toss, alter, keep
- First toss out all clothes that you can’t wear (torn, old, not fitting) at a simple glance
- Try on your clothes to see if they fit and compliment your body
- Be honest on rather they look good. If you are unable to be objective have a friend help out.
- Once you have the items sorted examine if you have the basics and what is missing
- Look to see what can be worn together and group them for easy access when getting dressed
- Get ideas from fashion magazines, other people and photos for new style combinations
I like to keep my closet by season (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring), Casual and Work. I have always had good luck with dry clean and hand washing of items to keep them looking their best.
