Seis Manos (Six Hands) is the story of Silencio, Isabella (Aislinn Derbez) and Jesus (Jonny Cruz) three orphans living in the fairy tale village of San Simon who were adopted by Chiu the Daoist Martial Arts Master (Vic Chiu). Chiu taught them all he knows (or did he?) but life intrudes when an orphan child Domino (Carlos Luna) hides at the homestead from the police after stealing a mango. It’s a domino effect when Silencio, Isabella and Jesus are dealing with childhood trauma and hiding from the world but all that is shattered when their father is brutally murdered by a strange intruder. They are joined by Garcia, Mexican Federale (Angelica Vale) and Brister, the DEA Agent (Mike Colter) to fight a lawless drug cartel led by El Balde (Danny Trejo) that has ties to Silencio and the supernatural in the eight episode series.
My take: I liked the ode to 70’s Kung Fu action movies with a new cultural spin to it and the mythology appeals to my inner and out blerd. It’s not ‘my Saturday’ morning cartoons I grew up with no this is more adult with themes of family, drugs, revenge, mommy issues and monstrous creatures that are hard as hell to kill. It reminds me of Grindhouse and the animation makes it stand out from most anime. Some may not like the look but I believe it enriches the ‘out of time’ story and enriches the story visually. The Kung Fu looks great, loved the representation in voice casting, diversity of characters & body types, the new mythology of Mexican witches and the writing.
