Yesterday we talked with Showrunner/Executive Producer May Chan and the show’s two stars–Miya Cech and YaYa Gosselin. Today we present our interview with the mind behind it all–Surfside Girls author Kim Dwinell, who graphic novels inspired the series. Based on the series of graphic novels by lifeguard-turned-illustrator and author, Kim Dwinell, Surfside Girls presents a modern celebration of girl power and the pre-teen mystery drama with the story of Sam (YaYa Gosselin) and Jade (Miya Cech) – two best friends from an idyllic seaside town who despite their common love of riding the waves take two very different approaches to the world around them. For Sam, her daily life is a springboard for her inspiring imagination, while Jade, who embraces her inner Bill Nye with equal relish, prefers to cast a more empirical eye on the mysteries that surround them. And in Surfside, one very big mystery is about to bubble to the surface and unfold over the course of the season. Here, Sam, following one rather gnarly wipeout, discovers what she believes to be a mysterious underwater cavern – one which holds more secrets than either of the two girls could have ever possibly imagined – involving what appears to be gold doubloons and the ghost of a young pirate called Remi (Spencer Rebello). Ultimately, it’s up to our two heroes, working together, to connect the dots, solve the mystery and save Surfside – and maybe, just maybe, help the ghosts of a couple of well-meaning pirates that they meet along the way.
All episodes of Surfside Girls are available to stream on AppleTV+ starting August 19th.
