SPOILERS (don’t read any further)

The final season kicked off with a bang or should I say clang as Sabine Wren is back and kicking Empire Ass with the help of her family and Mandalorian army! Star Wars Rebels has always been on a bit of a parallel path where I know it takes place somewhere before the original series but have never been sure when they would ‘catch up’. It seems that Dave and team have decided to tie up some loose ends and I am here for exploring how the Mandlorians switched sides. I’m hoping in the final season we’ll get more focus on each major character as we bid adieu. I have to say I probably know the characters a little better than some after reading how Hera & Kanan met in “Star Wars: A New Dawn” by John Jackson Miller (if you haven’t read go buy NOW).

The two episodes focus on Sabine trying to rescue her father from a rival clan and the civil war between two sides fighting for the Rebels and the Empire. Sabine is a young woman under incredible pressure trying to lead her people against such a major foe and despite all of her experiences fighting on the Ghost ground combat is a new kettle of fish especially when emotions can get in the way of thinking clearly. This was especially true when after finally succeeding and getting her father while her family is distracting stormtroopers. Sabine recognizes a sound and only warns her family (made me think a LOT less of her) to flee the new weapon unleashed by the Empire. It turns out when she was a student in a program to design weapons and one has bitten her in the bottom … well the armour since it’s been configured to ONLY kill Mandolorians. As she’s confronted by fellow rebels she explains that she never thought they’d be used and only thought of them as an abstract puzzle. Sabine (Tiya Sircar) is filled with guilt but also nerves of steel as she plots to figure out how to get the weapon away from the Empire. All the while this is going on she has to navigate her relationship with her father that seems loving but of course she followed in her mother’s footsteps not her artistic fathers. We got a major treat with seeing old fan favorite Bo-Katan from The Clone Wars, Ursa Wren and Sabine interact as they figure out their places in the echelon. If you’re a long time fan you can remember how differently all three women lead and strategize. We were reminded that because of civil war what was once a lush green planet is now a desert and you can’t help but wonder if the problem isn’t the Empire but the culture that doesn’t know how to compromise or be peaceful. Of course Clan Saxon with dreams of dictatorship is so villainous that at the end I was cheering for them to get what they deserve as well as thinking that maybe they should give up the armor! It seems to make them warriors first and last with a shoot first attitude that will lead to their annihilation. Ezra and Kanan offered not only a little comic relif, foils to explain history but also emotional growth as once again Ezra flirts with the

darkside. The two part premier was a great bridge to showing how the main characters have matured, hints to the paths they will walk as we hurtle to the finale and the reunion between Hera and Kanan. It feels that as the Ghost crew matures Hera is respecting them more and sharing her many secrets from Mon Mothma. We saw few glimpses that Ezra’s Jedi powers have grown but he’s still is learning from Kanan but he’s so drawn to anger that I think Darth Maul still has a hold of his heart. I love how Chopper gave the prisoners orders and was in CHARGE! It was a hoot and a reminder that Chopper can defend himself when it comes right down to it! Brains and Brawns is my type of computer friend!

“Heroes of Mandalore” was a great premier episode to show us how much are rebel alliance has grown despite failures but how close to the edge they are to splintering apart with extremists whispering ‘sweet nothings’ of revenge. I’m hoping to see more stories focused on Zeb, Saw Gerra and my favorite Rebel deep throat turncoat!
