One last ride: “Bad Boys For Life” Movie Review

Spread the love

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have teamed back up to give us the third movie, making it officially a trilogy, Bad Boys For Life. I have been a fan of this story line from the beginning and now that we are here, 17 years later and I realized, I missed this shit. The chemistry between Lawrence and Smith is just as dynamic as before, like we haven’t missed a beat, let alone almost 2 decades. I am not going to spoiling anything for you, but you have to know what is in store for you.

There is drama, comedy, car chases, shoot outs and a little family drama. All the things we expect from our resident Bad Boys, but something you find in these frames and characters, rather unexpectedly, is growth. Coming back to Marcus, who wanted to retire last time we saw them, is still itching for some home time. While Mike is still, foolishly, trying to hang on to his playboy lifestyle that he is not really suited for anymore. I know, a middle-aged man trying to recapture his 30s is not what you would think is growth, but it is there. Mike is taken on an emotional journey of his past in order to better see his future and I think he may have done that at the end.

We get a look at the next generation of smart mouth, fast talking, gun slinging kick asses in the newly formed unit AMMO. Don’t ask me what it means, I can’t remember. Mike comes face to face with a younger version of himself and has to find a way to handle it. It takes some time. Though Marcus wants to get away from the madness, being a Bad Boy means there is violence to be dealt out.

Throughout the film, there will be surprises, laughs and unfortunately, tears. There is no way to prepare you for it, but know it is there.

When they said Bad Boys for life, I think Sony meant it as a promise. Moreso, it looks like Sony is not trying to let the Bad Boys legacy end here or with Lawrence and Smith, and though I appreciate the sentiment, I am not sure there is a dynamic that could step into these shoes and ever fill them. I am more than happy to see a full reprise in another installation. Sooner than later. We will see what happens from here. Until then, check out Bad Boys For Life, in theaters now.
