I had the pleasure to cover the legendary icon Nichelle Nichols celebrating her 85th birthday with family, friends and fans!
Ms. Nichols normally celebrates with friends and families but this year gave 35 lucky fans the opportunity to attend this special milestone birthday.
The celebration kicked off with a red carpet where I was able to ask Ms. Nichols a few questions. The festivities included Carmen Carter and Robert Davi serenading Ms. Nichols in the private dining area at La Piazza (The Grove LA), a special video and everyone sang ‘Happy Birthday’ with a toast of champagne and Sprinkles cupcakes.Â
It was a delightful evening to see the woman who’s inspirational portrayal of Uhura on Star Trek was an inspiration for children and adults across the world. It was a role she considered not accepting until Martin Luther King reached out to ask her to reconsiders her decision. The non-stereotypical role as an officer exploring space would be the first one forÂ
black women on television that wasn’t a wife, domestic or secretary. Her role blazed a path to the stars for future NASA Astronaut Mae Carol Jemison and so many others to go into STEM. In real life Ms. Nichols began volunteering with NASA and other charitable missions as well as continued acting and appearing at conventions across the world.
