I saw John Carter of Mars this summer and thought the movie was fine. It wasn’t rocket science but it wasn’t made for me in mind. I think it was originally supposed to be a kid’s movie and then someone decided to sex it up to attract teens/men but they didn’t keep in mind that the alien creatures would likely freak small kids out! As bad as people said it was it kept my attention despite the slower bits, lack of much diversity and antiquated language. I’d read the book in my teen years but didn’t love it so never ready any other Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. Now I do enjoy a good well written novel from various time periods. I still love ‘A tale of two cities‘, ‘Romeo & Juliet‘ can still bring me to tears and ‘Pride and Prejudice‘ <sigh> can I have a mysterious dashing tortured love??? “To kill a mockingbird’ a great book AND movie (not easily done!) but not every book can appeal to my mercurial moods or what novels that I enjoy. Just because I like it doesn’t mean that the ‘common man’ will enjoy it .. usually it means they won’t! So am a bit curious about Jane Carver of Waar is it an old fashioned sexist pot boiler or a modern take of the western on Mars (ha didn’t think I’d use that turn of phrase). But of course I can never resist free so it has been added to my library of free and paid for B&N Books on my Nook Color! I always hope they’ll have a science fiction or fantasy selection that will make me excited to buy books by the author since I do love someone with a gift for writing appealing imaginative characters. Have you found any new books or authors that you love? Let me know and I’ll check them out!
