I am generally not a fan of sequels, they rarely do the original any justice, yet there are a few that do, in this case, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is one of the exceptions to that policy. Being a mom I have trouble finding films that my kids would like and I won’t sit in the theater begging for the film to be over with, in this, we are all on board.
Disney re-imagined Maleficent in its first installation and expanded on the beauty of her tale in the second. It was more than just a story arc that we see in one film, it was a continuous journey for Maleficent that tugs at your heart strings. Angelina Jolie was stunningly profound and her embodiment of the “evil villain” with complexities and depth, molded around a touch of gold in her heart was exquisite to behold once again.
Going to see any movie, as a former film student, I look for things that some might not consider. The first being, the beauty of the film. The cinematography is beyond gorgeous. Adding CG and special effects had to cost a pretty penny, because they were a slice of perfection. Disney also impressed with the dimensions of the film in story and in character building. Many films attempt to achieve what Disney just did, create dynamic characters with a humanity that threads throughout each step, making them relatable to all ages.
The movie slips away from common love stories, as it did in the first, and focuses on the love of a mother and child, and the torments that come with it. That conflict is handled in such a beautiful way, that as a mother, I could not help but appreciate. Disney has handled defining love in different ways quite adeptly in the past 10-15 years and I am in my own space of love with them for it. Touching on the different facets and levels of love, especially between a non-stereotype way, gives me joy. If for no other reason is that the lessons it is imparting on our youth, re-enforcing the values we try to instill at home, is complex and wholesome. Disney gets a win with my favorite “villain” in spades.
When thinking of a family night fun time, I highly recommend this for the family. To be upfront though, if your child is under the age of 5/can’t sit through a film, wait until it comes out on DVD, because you won’t want to miss one moment of this film.
