For eleven seasons, the Gallagher family on Showtime’s Shameless captivated audiences with both dark humor and gritty, captivating and sometimes heartbreaking drama.
Now fans (and new audiences) can relive the Gallagher family’s dysfunctional antics as Shameless: The Complete Series has been released in a new DVD box set from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment, who sent Cherry the Geek TV a copy for review.
The DVD set includes all 134 episodes, spread across 26 discs, along with a slew of bonus features that delve into the making of the show. This comprehensive collection is a must-have for anyone who’s fallen in love with the show’s unapologetic humor, complex characters, and gritty portrayal of life on the margins.
William H. Macy stars as Frank Gallagher, the family’s patriarch and a lovable, yet despicable, drunk. The supporting cast includes Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), and Shanola Hampton. The entire ensemble delivers impressive performances.
Throughout its 11-season run, Shameless tackled a wide range of topics, from poverty and addiction to identity and social justice. The show’s creator, Paul Abbott, and the writing team deserve credit for their unflinching portrayal of these issues, often incorporating humor and heart into even the darkest storylines.
My minor criticism would be that the set was only released on DVD. HD Masters exist–the show would definitely look better on Blu-ray. With that being said, the show looks and sounds fine for the DVD format. If the series sells well, perhaps Warner Bros. Discovery will upgrade the series in the future.
Where the set really shines though is in the bonus features. Each of the seasons has their own set of extras. There are deleted scenes for all eleven seasons, 22 featurettes, a music video, three commentary tracks, cast discussions, and a “Shameless: Last Call” panel. There are even a few easter eggs for those willing to explore the menus.
Shameless: The Complete Series DVD set is a must-own for fans of the show. With its comprehensive bonus features, and, of course, the entire 11-season run of the show, this collection is a testament to the enduring power of Shameless, which had a loyal fan base over its run on Showtime.
