What I learned at the U.S.-China Film Summit
I attended the film summit on November 1, 2011 at the Westside Landmark Theatre and learned quite a bit about business of China’s collaboration with the U.S. Entertainment Industry. When the average American thinks of Chinese films in their minds it’s men flying in robes, fighting with swords, practicing ‘movie style’ martial arts and of course beautiful Asian Women.
But if you were one of the attendees at this sold out U.S.-China Film Summit you not only heard about the robust film attendance market that is happening in China but that the U.S. is seeing money in the far East. I was lucky enough to speak with a few of the panelists about working on movies that would appeal to their homegrown audience but also be appealing to other markets. Since like their American counterparts they want to make money, have their creative vision appreciated and of course receive accolades for their talents.
I got to interview a few of the panelists. I had a great conversation with Janet Yang of Janet Yang Productions about her new film ‘Dark Matter’ with Liu Ye, Aidan Quinn and Meryl Streep. Ivy Zhong Co-Chairman of Galloping Horse Media and I spoke about films that are appealing to movie goers and that are likely to get made. Not surprising young people rule the box office in just about every country!!! I was very excited to talk with an up and coming creative dynamo named Dayyan Eng. He’s the Producer, Writer & Director of the new comedy ‘Inseparable’ with Kevin Spacey and it’s HILARIOUS!!! Keep an eye out for this film when it’s out at the theatre’s since you will LOVE it! My final interview was with the charming, handsome and funny Tom DeSanto, Writer/Producer of the Transformers and X-Men. We spoke about his upcoming action film and the one that got away the live action Teen Titans! I so hope he’ll make it one day!!
