Clerk, Malcolm ingram’s documentary that chronicles Kevin Smith’s career from before he made his debut film Clerks to present day, is now available on special edition Blu-ray (available exclusively at http://MercantileInstinct.com). Using interviews, clips, testimonials and never-before-seen archival footage, Clerk is a colorful oral history of one of the entertainment industry’s most incredible journeys, as told by his friends, his collaborators, industry professionals and the Not So Silent Bob himself, Kevin Smith.
Cherry the Geek TV spoke with Clerk director Malcolm Ingram about the film, his long-time friendship with Kevin Smith, making the documentary, the Blu-ray bonus features, and more.
Ingram recalls the first time he met Smith at the Toronto Film Festival in 1994 after a Clerks screening. “It’s a funny story. There was a dinner after the screening in Toronto and Kevin asked me what I thought of the movie and apparently I said ‘Eh, it was alright.’ He liked the fact that I didn’t fawn over it.” That led to a decades-long friendship and working relationship.
The 25-year Anniversary of Clerks led to the documentary. “He had been approached to write a book about Clerks and the 25-year career after and he asked if I wanted to write it,” Ingram said. “I’m a documentarian. I said I’d rather make a documentary. I had seen the tale unfolding as it was happening. I knew the story to tell. There are many ways you could tell Kevin’s story. I knew the story I wanted to tell and it just kinda worked.”
Ingram then assembled the people he wanted to help tell the story. He got the usual suspects like Jason Mewes (Jay of Jay and Silent Bob), producer Scott Mosier, and Comic Book Men Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson, but also people like filmmakers Richard Linklater and Jason Reitman, Stan Lee (in his final interview), Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and magician Penn Jillette, as well as family members like Smith’s mother and brother, wife, and daughter Harley Quinn.
“I got most of the people I wanted to talk to. There were no glaring omissions,” Ingram said. “We have some interesting voices (telling the story).”
