I love movies and tv from the way they look to how they make me feel it’s not just the script or the cast it’s the world they build that sparks my imagination. This year the ADG will be bring panels and signings to the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con with artists who worked on Black Panther, Westworld, and Captain Marvel to name a few. You can swing by the booth, learn about year round programs and hear from the talent that is normally shrouded in mystery! ADG is bringing the Production Designers, Art Directors, Illustrators, Graphic Designers, and Set Designers who will revel the secrets behind the curtain of how it gets done!
WOMEN OF THE HOLLYWOOD ART DEPARTMENT Friday, July 19 11:00 – – 12:00 p.m., Room 9 Hear from a panel of talented women from the Art Directors Guild whose careers span a variety of design roles within the film and TV industries. They will discuss their professional journeys in the industry, how they envision the Art Department of the future, and the unique challenges they face as visual storytellers, creating distinct and wondrous worlds for today’s most popular films and TV shows. BUILDING CINEMATIC DREAMS Friday, July 19 from 2:00 –- 3:00 p.m., Room 9 Everyone dreams of adventures in other places, on other worlds, and in other times – especially the people of Comic-Con. Could it be genre movies and TV? Where do those astonishing worlds come from? They begin with the Production Designer dreaming about the best possible world in which to set a story. There’s research, and plenty of collaboration; with the Director, Cinematographer and an army of art department and visual effects artists, of course. The Art Directors Guild brings you some of the foremost designers to share with you their techniques, thoughts, and dreams: Jeffrey Beecroft (Transformers: The Last Knight, 12 Monkeys), Todd Cherniawsky (Star Trek Discovery, Pet Sematary), Caylah Eddlebute & Steve Joyner (Alita: Battle Angel, Predators), and moderator John Muto (Species, Terminator 2 – 3D).Â

ARTWORK TO SCREEN: COMICS COME TO LIFE! Saturday, July 20 1:00 –- 2:00 p.m., Room 23ABC Comic pages, storyboards, and production illustration have developed together since the invention of film, with each influencing the others. What skills do film artists bring to the job that are comparable between the printed page and the moving pictures? The Motion Picture Film Illustrators of the Art Directors Guild will share their experiences working on major films, television, and streaming shows based on comic book, fantasy, and sci-fi adventures. What was once only possible on the printed page can now be brought to life by these talented artists. Panelists include David Lowery (The Lion King, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Matthew Cunningham (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Doom Patrol), Danelle Davenport (Baby Driver, Ant-Man), Aaron Sowd (Spider-Man: Far From Home, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), and moderator Tim Burgard (Rampage, Justice League).

2019 MASQUERADE: COMIC-CON’S ANNUAL COSTUME COMPETITION Saturday, July 20 starting at 8:30 p.m., Ballroom 20 Tickets are required for Ballroom 20. To ensure that no one waits in the long line only to discover that all seats are taken, free tickets will be distributed beginning at noon on Saturday to those lining up near Ballroom 20. ART DIRECTORS GUILD BOOTH – San Diego Convention Center July 18 – 21 – Booth #5563 The Art Directors Guild has partnered with Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art (LAAFA), to occupy booth #5563 in the Exhibit Hall. Throughout the convention, visitors will have the opportunity to talk to ADG members, experience live demonstrations and pick up a special Comic-Con issue of the guildÂ’s magazine Perspective.
