Free Fridays on Barnes and Noble with Jane Carver of Waar

Spread the love

John Carter Poster

I saw John Carter of Mars this summer and thought the movie was fine.  It wasn’t rocket science but it wasn’t made for me in mind.  I think it was originally supposed to be a kid’s movie and then someone decided to sex it up to attract teens/men but they didn’t keep in mind that the alien creatures would likely freak small kids out!  As bad as people said it was it kept my attention despite the slower bits, lack of much diversity and antiquated language.  I’d read the book in my teen years but didn’t love it so never ready any other Edgar Rice Burroughs novels.  Now I do enjoy a good well written novel from various time periods.  I still love ‘A tale of two cities‘, ‘Romeo & Juliet‘ can still bring me to tears and ‘Pride and Prejudice‘ <sigh> can I have a mysterious dashing tortured love??? “To kill a mockingbird’ a great book AND movie (not easily done!) but not every book can appeal to my mercurial moods or what novels that I enjoy.  Just because I like it doesn’t mean that the ‘common man’ will enjoy it .. usually it means they won’t!  So am a bit curious about Jane Carver of Waar is it an old fashioned sexist pot boiler or a modern take of the western on Mars (ha didn’t think I’d use that turn of phrase). But of course I can never resist free so it has been added to my library of free and paid for B&N Books on my Nook Color!  I always hope they’ll have a science fiction or fantasy selection that will make me excited to buy books by the author since I do love someone with a gift for writing appealing imaginative characters.  Have you found any new books or authors that you love?  Let me know and I’ll check them out!

Don’t forget to download this week’s B&N Free Nook Friday book before it’s gone!  So check out Jane Carver of Waar it looks like a fun bit of fluff and for the price (free) you just can’t go wrong!  Book you next week and enjoy the weekend with a good ebook!  Cherry

The recent John Carter film adaptation (starring Taylor “Tim Riggins” Kitsch from my favorite show of all time, Friday Night Lights) may not have broken box office records, but it did ignite renewed interest in Edgar Rice Burroughs’s influential classic SciFi series, John Carter of Mars.  Today’s Free Fridays selection, Jane Carver of Waar by Nathan Long, is a (tongue-in-cheek) homage to Burroughs’s epic swashbuckling space tales. In this updated extraterrestrial adventure, Long replaces the macho John Carter with an equally fearless heroine, Jane Carver, a hard-ridin’, hard-lovin’ biker chick and ex-Airborne Ranger. When Jane finds herself alone on a distant planet inhabited by all types of inhospitable aliens, it’s time to put her Ranger training to good use, and find a way home…fast!

If you love an old-fashioned SciFi adventure, with some quirky, 21st century updates, you’ll have a lot of fun following Jane’s high-octane encounters. More action awaits in the series’ next book, Jane Carver Swords of Waar, available now for pre-order.
