The cast of the new DC Universe Animated Movie Green Lantern:Beware My Power was on hand at Comic-Con International in San Diego to premiere the film to an audience in Ballroom 20 in advance of this week’s debut on Blu-ray, 4K, and Digital. Before the premiere, they stopped by to chat with Cherry the Geek TV. We will be presenting the interviews all week.
Today we speak to Aldis Hodge (Leverage, One Night in Miami), who voices Green Lantern John Stewart in the film. Hodge was a big fan of the character before he was even cast. “I love animation. I love anime. I love comics. I definitely was a fan of John Stewart, the Green Lantern Corps…I wanted to play John Stewart for a long time, and to get to voice him in the animated world is icing on the cake,”he said.
John Stewart is not the only DC character Hodge is playing this year. He also stars as Hawkman later this year in Black Adam, opposite Dwayne Johnson. Animation voice work is much easier than preparing for a big-budget action film. “It’s a lot easier on my back,” laughed Hodge. “There are challenges (in animation) though that I don’t have control of. All I can control is my voice. When I’m performing vocally, I have to be aware of the options vocally that I can give. You want to give your animators as many options as possible…different inflections in voice. You have to be aware of how you sound and what kind of energy you’re putting out because sometimes we think we sound cool but we really don’t. I don’t undervalue anyone in the voice acting industry because it’s a lot harder than people presume.”
