I’m sure Alexis Michalik read Cryano de Bergerac during his formative years and it must have made an impression since he wrote Edmond his award winning stage play that has been adapted into the new film CYRANO, MY LOVE starring Thomas Solivérès, Olivier Gourmet and Mathilde Seigner.
I remember reading Cryano de Bergerac in Junior High School but I never thought of the person who wrote the classic French play written by Edmond Rostand. The new film CYRANO, MY LOVE tells the story of a man with kids, wife and in debt as he scrambles to make money. The story itself has always been timeless to me from seeing the traditional films to the comedy Roxanne starring Steve Martin & Daryl Hannah. Who hasn’t fallen in love but lack of confidence in looks, wit and charm stood in the way of even dipping a toe to pursue love. As an adult I wonder what was the inspiration for Edmond Rostand (Thomas Solivérès) to write the play? Your curiosity can now be answered with the film that will be released October 18th.
CYRANO, MY LOVE: December 1897, Paris. Edmond Rostand is not yet thirty but already has two children and too much anxiety. He has not written anything for two years. In desperation, he offers the great Constant Coquelin a new play, a heroic comedy, in verse, for the holidays. There’s one problem: it is not written yet. Ignoring the whims of actresses, the demands of his producers, the jealousy of his wife, the stories of his best friend’s heart and the lack of enthusiasm of all those around him, Edmond must focus and put to pen to paper. For now, he has only the title: “Cyrano de Bergerac”.
Written, directed and acted by Alexis Michalik. Produced by Alain Goldman. Starring Thomas Solivérès, Olivier Gourmet and Mathilde Seigner. A Roadside Attractions release.
