I saw a screening of Extraterrestial with a Q&A with Nacho Vigalondo, the director afterwards this evening at the 4pm screening during the AFI Fest 2011 in Hollywood, CA. I found it to be an amusing frothy science fiction romantic comedy that was fun to watch. It’s all about the lies people tell during an alien invasion as a backdrop. Really the aliens are secondary to the crazy threesome or would it be a foursome with the creepy next door neighbor. It was interesting to watch how everyone was manipulating the heck out of each other and NOT to survive monsters from space but just the normal craziness when your cooped up too long with people! If your in Hollywood I recommend seeing the second screening on 11/7/11 at 10:30 pm at the Chinese 6 Theaters at Hollywood & Highland.
Nacho Vigalondo’s second feature solidifies his status as one of the most creative and exciting young filmmakers around. His first feature TIMECRIMES (an Official Selection at AFI FEST 2008) told the story of a man who stumbles into a time machine and the improbable events that followed. Vigalondo’s new film takes a similarly high-concept premise but veers into wildly different territory. EXTRATERRESTIAL begins by announcing the arrival of massive alien spaceships above modern-day Madrid. But instead of a sci-fi space opera, we are treated to one of the most delightful romantic comedies in recent years. The alien invasion is only the catalyst for human deception, betrayal and suspicion on an intergalactic scale. Glowing with incredible chemistry between lead actors Julián Villagrán and Michelle Jenner, this may be the best comic romances to feature motherships ever made. -Lane Kneedler – AFI Fest 2011
