The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival is celebrating 32 years with 140 films screening April 21 – 28 showing the diversity on screen that include documentaries and scripted films to scare and laugh! This year they have the world premier of Lena Khan’s ‘The Tiger Hunter’ as the opening night movie. the Centerpiece documentary is ‘Tyrus’ from Pamela Tom. In addition to six world premiers including LA filmmakers Ryan Yu’s ‘The Last Tour’, Janice Tanaka’s ‘Rebel with a Cause’ and Quentin Lee’s ‘THE UNBIDDEN’. Artist Spotlight presents Award Winning Director Dai Sil Kim-Gibson with the LA Premier of ‘People are the Sky’ and special presentations of ‘Silence Broken: Korean Comfort Women’ and ‘SA-I-GU: From Korean Women’s Perspectives’. Jonathan Lim’s ‘Pali Road’ is the closing night film. It’s exciting to see these films that will start some serious conversations about history, women and the silence that Asian artists face in US film & TV with so little representation.

About: Visual Communications (VC), the nation’s premier Asian Pacific American media arts center, announced its program of outstanding films for the upcoming 32nd edition of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF) running April 21-28, 2016. This annual film celebration is presented across the city of Los Angeles from Little Tokyo to the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles to Koreatown and to West Hollywood.
VC proudly celebrates 32 years as Southern California’s largest and most prestigious film festival of its kind. The LAAPFF launches the pre-celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month through this year’s slate of over 140 films from both Asian Pacific American and Asian international artists. For over three decades, the Festival has presented more than 3,800 films and shorts by Asian American and Asian international talent. This year, a total of 140 films comprised of 34 feature films and 106 shorts will be showcased throughout the eight-day fest.
As the word “diversity” is being thrown around in Hollywood, the LAAPFF is providing the best opportunity to experience this first hand through talent both in front and behind the camera. Stories by women, men, LGBT artists, Asian Americans, Asian international, and a multitude of ethnicities are all being highlighted and shared at the Festival.
THE TIGER HUNTER- WORLD PREMIERE Directed by Lena Khan
This year’s opening night gala features the World Premiere of writer/director/producer Lena Khan’s comedy THE TIGER HUNTER starring Danny Pudi (NBC TVs Community), Karen David(ABC TVs Galavant), Jon Heder (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE) and Rizwan Manji (WOLF OF WALL STREET) The film celebrates the array of some of the most talented female Southasian Indian American artists in Hollywood with Khan as the auteur writer/director/producer, joined by her producer and Fest Alum Megha Kadakia and starring Karen David – one of the most sought after actresses in the industry.
“Opening night with the world premiere of THE TIGER HUNTER will jump start our amazing line up of our own talent,” states VC Executive Director Francis Cullado. “This year, we are proud to be showcasing some of our best artists. It is our time to showcase diversity and to celebrate it as well. And kicking off with Lena’s film is just the tip of the iceberg of the films everyone will experience at the festival. It’s going to be a great festival.”

The Festival Centerpiece Presentation of the Los Angeles premiere of TYRUS welcomes former VC staffer Pamela Tom with her feature filmdirectorial debut. Fresh off its triumphant World Premiere at the 2015 Telluride Film Festival, TYRUS celebrates the life and art of Tyrus Wong, a legendary Chinese American painter, production illustrator, lithographer, and kite builder best known for his concept art for Walt Disney’s feature animated film BAMBI. Beginning with the achievement of BAMBI to his game-changing later career as a production concept artist for Warner Bros. Studios, Wong’s strikingly beautiful concept paintings and sketches continue to influence the work of generations of animators and production designers. TYRUS celebrates not only the beauty of his art but reveals to a larger audience a lesser known part of the Chinese American experience — that of its artists and creators.
TYRUS will screen Saturday, April 23 at 8PM at the Aratani Theatre at the JACCC in Little Tokyo – Downtown Los Angeles.
One of the Festival Special Presentations this year is the West Coast premiere of the rousing BAD RAP from director Salima Koroma. BAD RAP is an independent documentary about four Asian-American rappers who dream of succeeding in the mainstream; selling out huge venues; hearing themselves on the radio; and becoming household names. Through a colorful soundtrack, gritty visuals, and utter honesty, the characters share their experiences of fear, perceived failure, and hopes of triumph. And at its heart, the film is about young Asian Americans facing, head-on, a culture that expects them to fulfill the model minority stereotype.
BAD RAP highlights the lives of artists Dumbfoundead, Awkafina, Rekstizzy and Lyricks. It also includes accomplished Asian-American rap artists (Far East Movement), pop stars (Jay Park), YouTube celebrities (Traphik), and industry insiders, all in an effort to answer the following questions: Do people know or care about Asian-American rappers? What makes this group of rappers different? Why hasn’t there been an Asian-American rap star yet?
BAD RAP screens Wednesday, April 27 at 9:30 PM at the CGV Cinemas in Koreatown.
This year’s Fest boasts of six world premiere feature films from Asian American directors (including THE TIGER HUNTER):

Closing out this year’s celebration is the Los Angeles premiere of the acclaimed PALI ROAD from Los Angeles director Jonathan Lim. Director Lim brings together a stellar international cast including Chinese rising star Michelle Chen (BADGES OF FURY, YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE), Sung Kang (FAST AND FURIOUS 3,4,5,6 and 7), Jackson Rathbone (TWILIGHT film series), Elizabeth Sung (JOY LUCK CLUB, THE UNBIDDEN, YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS), and Tzi Ma (RUSH HOUR, VEEP, HELL ON WHEELS) for this stylish romance mystery.
Lily (Chen), a Chinese doctor, is doing her residency in a Hawaiian hospital under Dr. Kayne (Kang). She has fallen in love with schoolteacher Neil (Rathbone) — at least, this is what she remembers. After a terrible car accident, Lily wakes up to discover, in horror, a married life with Dr. Kayne, including a 5-year-old son she has never seen. With everyone around her denying Neil’s existence, Lily begins to question her sanity, as recurring memories of Neil force her to embark on a journey to retrace her past and discover the truth.

No longer can it be said that Asian PacificAmerican talent is non-existent. We are active in writing, directing, producing, acting, film distribution and exhibition, below the line positions and executive roles in the film industry. This year, Asian Pacific American directors are more than half of our feature film lineup. These filmmakers are not waiting for a studio or someone else to approve them to make their film. And it is this independent spirit that is prevalent in a major way this year at the Fest with our own filmmakers are raising the bar in terms of creating and producing feature films that add to the American cinematic experience and to our ever growing Asian American Cinema. It’s an exciting time to be Asian Pacific American in Hollywood.”
This year’s Artist Spotlight focuses on the award winning prolific documentary filmmaker Dai Sil Kim-Gibson. Unwavering in her staunch clarity of artistic vision, North Korean born Kim-Gibson embraces the realities and possibilities of a multi-ethnic America. Unflinching in her perspective, honed by years working and living here in the U.S. as an educator, grants officer, filmmaker and arts advocate, her filmography offers an expansive world-view of both historical and contemporary issues affecting Asian diasporic communities.
The Fest will present the Los Angeles Premiere of Kim-Gibson’s latest feature documentary, PEOPLE ARE THE SKY with two of her earlier works. This long overdue tribute will provide a well-deserved spotlight on the career of this one-of-a-kind talent, who, at age 78, is still sharply perceptive and feisty as ever. The LAAPFF is once again proud to present at the Festival two programs with a long and historic significance to Visual Communications: The Armed With a Camera Fellowship and Digital Histories. The Armed With a Camera Fellowship nurtures the next generation of AsianPacific American media artists to capture their world, surrounding, and outlook on life. The LAAPFF is proud to feature the sixth edition of C3 – the Conference For Creative Content where creative and Hollywood industry leaders join together to create a dialogue with the community discussing important issues and trends taking place in the entertainment arena. The only event of its kind, C3 brings together foremost media professionals in film, television, cable, digital, and transmedia to create a dialogue on the ever-changing media industry, share best practices, network, celebrate and build a collective vision for our community. Every year, the LAAPFF International Showcase of new works from Asia highlights films and filmmakers from throughout the continent. This year is no different as the Festival boasts acclaimed features from India, Vietnam, the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Cambodia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Japan and Hong Kong.

UPON THE FRAGILE SHORE is a short film based on the play by the Obie award-winning playwright Carded Svich. A cast of four that explores human rights and environmental issues around the world especially in relationship to human-made tragedies and their aftermath. This film centers on stories from the Venezuela, Colorado, and Louisiana with four interlocking stories. All of us living on the fragile shore. It asks for all of us to consider how we live in vulnerable spaces, be it due to coastal erosion and vanishing ways of life, in resistance to oppression. during and after wars, and in the suspended fragile states of collective grief. The performance piece is a way to build sustaining connected spaces for us to consider our vulnerabilities in an already fragile world, and how we can find strength in these spaces.
