The Old Way Review

Nicolas Cage is out for revenge with his daughter in the wild west

The retelling of a classic western written by Carl W. Lucas and directed by Brett Donowho is a story as old as time … revenge in the old wild west as a reformed gunslinger who was reformed by the love of a good woman.

Colton Briggs (Nicolas Cage) is a reformed gunslinger after a lifetime of being a hired gun. He’s now a married father with a daughter running a shop in a town. But sometimes the past returns and one-day a strange man visit his home and murder his wife. This starts him on a path back to his old life and his bringing his daughter to life with blood, bullets, and revenge.

Carl weaves a story that is compelling and fascinating as the façade breaks away without his wife to hold it together his daughter Brooke (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) becomes a cricket on his shoulder pulling him back from his old ways.

It has a surprising emotional punch as Colton and Brooke peel back their veneer of normalcy and reveal to each other their lack of emotion and feeling like others. Neither realized the other was pretending to be like everyone else to blend into society as they slowly get to know each other riding to meet the gang of men who killed his wife and her mother.

This is a Nicolas Cage movie but the rest of the cast have their own quiet moments to shine and show their acting chops. The bad men are bad but are shown to be human with their own reasons for revenge and greed. The good guys with badges are ‘business acquaintances’ who remember the old Briggs and want to keep that devilish genie in the bottle but run into their own trouble as the film builds to the final showdown.

The movie is currently in theatres and will be released VOD on January 13, 2023.
